PhoenixMUD 4.0, in development since late 1996, was released for playtesting in August of 1998. Beta testing of the mud has taken place for over a year now, with constant changes and improvements. Most of the current changes are minor, however a few major features are still in development. Check the 'NEWS' command on the mud for information on recent changes to both areas and code.

While PhoenixMUD 4.0, like any other MUD, is geared towards the players, the new codebase contains many features designed to make the builder's life easier and more enjoyable. Many of the more significant changes to the MUD are in the back-end--in features that builders and questors use everyday to make more interesting areas and quests. Players should begin seeing the fruit of the builder's endeavours with new areas that are rich with mob, object, and room scripting. The scripting language available to builders is full-featured and allows scripters to control almost any aspect of an object, mobile, room, or player. Players should find many 'mini-quests' inside of zones which will enhance the role-playing experience.
